Main Scriptures: Romans 12:1-2, 9-21
Additional Scriptures: 1 Samuel 24:10-12, Revelation 12:11
POINTS:
To overcome evil: a military word; don’t pay back evil with evil.
The reason you don’t respond to evil with evil is so that evil doesn’t control you.
To heap burning coals on someone is to create an alarm; it means to wake people up.
To overcome evil, you must identify the evil done as more the enemy than the evildoer.
To overcome evil:
We must hate the evil that is hurting the evildoer.
We must have a humble heart that blesses the evildoer.
Be aggressively forgiving.
Look to the cross and see Jesus overcome evil with good.
It is the love of God that causes you to hate sin.
When someone slaps you on the cheek, they are insulting you.
To turn the other cheek means not to let the person continue to do what they’ve been doing.
To overcome evil means to have peace on the inside because saving face is no longer a priority for you.
To bless the evildoer means to tell someone the truth, but in an affirming way.
A blessing is honest and loving.
Every time you bring the matter up, whether it is to them, other people, or yourself, evil is overcoming you.
To forgive means you stop replaying the narrative.
On the cross, we see that love and truth are costly. Love without truth or truth without love costs you nothing.
