James 1:18–27 — Becoming More Like Jesus
BIG IDEA: God’s Word doesn’t exist to confirm me; it exists to transform me. I don’t want to be someone who is simply right—I want to be someone who looks like Jesus.
CHECK YOUR POSTURE
James calls us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. This is more than behavior—it is a posture of humility before God’s Word.
Pride says: “I know better.” Humility says: “God, show me where I’m wrong.”
Ask: Am I more committed to being right than being transformed?
RECEIVE THE WORD
God’s Word is like a mirror. It reveals what is already in us—our attitudes, motives, pride, fears, and sin.
The Word reveals what needs to change because God loves us too much to leave us the same.
RESPOND TO THE WORD
When God shows us something, we can defend it, explain it away, or blame someone else.
Or we can say: “God, You’re right. I’m wrong. Change me.”
Repentance means turning toward God and surrendering our way for His.
REFLECT THE WORD
If the Word is really getting in me, eventually it will come out of me.
It changes my mouth.
It changes how I treat people.
It changes how I live.
The goal isn't simply to know the Bible. The goal is to become more like Jesus.
THIS WEEK
When you find yourself frustrated, critical, or convinced you're right, stop and ask: “God, what are You showing me?” Receive it. Respond to it. Reflect it.
