James 4:4–10 — Stop Defending the Lie

BIG IDEA: Stop defending the lie. Draw near to the Truth.

Self-sufficiency says “I’VE GOT THIS”
We can say Jesus is Lord while still insisting on having the final say. Good things like responsibility, success, and control can become idols when we depend on them instead of God.
Your responsibility is obedience. The outcome belongs to God.
You can love people without controlling them and be faithful without guaranteeing the outcome.

Grace invites us to OPEN HANDS
God exposes our pride not to destroy us, but to bring us back to life. He opposes the proud but gives more grace to the humble.
Pride says, “I’ve got this.” Grace says, “I need You, Lord.”
Conviction invites us to repentance; condemnation tells us we’re hopeless. We can confess our sin because our hope is in Jesus, not our ability to appear righteous.

Repentance means DRAWING NEAR
Submit to God, resist the lies shaping your life, and draw near to the God who welcomes you home. Repentance is more than feeling bad—it’s turning away from what pulls us from God and turning toward Him.
Stop defending what God is asking you to surrender.
Humble yourself before the Lord and trust His grace, character, and timing.

THIS WEEK
Ask God to reveal what you’ve been trying to control.
What lie have I been believing?
What is God asking me to surrender?
What does obedience look like when I entrust Him with the outcome?
