POINTS:
Active Disciplines: the spiritual disciplines you begin learning as a Christian and continue to put into practice when pressure comes
Passive Disciplines: the spiritual disciplines that you can only learn through trials.
The product of active and passive disciplines is that we will become more like Jesus.
Two common responses to trials during adolescence is shame and blame.
The purpose of adverse circumstances for a Christian is always intended for our good and growth.
One of the surest signs that we are in the adolescent phase of our spiritual growth is our surprise at opposition.
If you find yourself in the dirt of yesterday, dig for God’s hand in the dirt; He is there, and He is the only Hope that doesn’t disappoint.
The Pattern of Growth: Test, Training, Temptation.
Test: Adverse circumstances that reveal what is really going on in our hearts.
Training: means applying disciplines you already know more vigorously (active discipline) and learning new disciplines you could not otherwise learn (passive discipline).
Going through it: complaining, blaming, shaming, whining, worrying, and gossiping.
Growing through it: thanking, giving, loving, leading, hoping, and persevering.
Active disciplines we must learn: 1. The fundamentals of Christianity 2. How to feed ourselves spiritually. 3. How to participate in active discipline in the context of Kingdom Community.
You have to be faithful as a servant before you will be promoted to a steward
Temptation: the solicitation to do evil.
We resist temptation by remaining in Christ.
