Main Scriptures: Philippians 3:1-11

Additional Scriptures: Colossians 2:6-7, Romans 10:1-4, Philippians 4:6-7, 1 John 2:1

POINTS:

  • Rooted = establish deeply and firmly.

  • Repentance and faith act like a compass on our Christian journey. Faith tells us where to go, and repentance tells us what direction we should turn from to get there.

  • Our definition of righteousness: the right performance.

  • God’s definition of righteousness: relational, and it means to be in right standing with God.

  • The biggest fear at the core of humanity is rejection.

  • We all form a standard of righteousness that we think we can live up to.

  • Our standard of righteousness comes from the verdicts others have given on our performance. And over time, these verdicts accumulate, and they become our standard of righteousness.

  • We can tell we are rooted in our own standard of righteousness by: the fruit this righteousness bears.

  • The result of our standard of righteousness is always shame, anxiety, and jealousy and envy.

  • The gospel is when we stop trying to run after self-acceptance from other sources and receive the final verdict from the One voice that truly matters.

  • The passive discipline of Jesus Christ is that He paid for our sin on the Cross.

  • The active discipline of Jesus Christ is Christ living the life we should have lived.

  • “I used to think that it took the greatest amount of courage to confess your sin. But growth in Christ has taught that there is a battle that requires even more courage. And that is the battle to receive the love that Christ gives us. “ -Pastor Hope Flask

  • The true and only incentive for growth and righteousness for a Christian is the love of God.
