POINTS:
All sin makes us addicts, because it destroys our tolerance, perpetuates denial, and drains our willpower.
Gluttony is taking something good and cramming it in until we are so full of it that we think we are going to explode.
Self-control is the Spirit-empowered ability to master one’s desires, emotions, and impulses, aligning them with God’s will rather than yielding to sinful temptation.
The self-control of Israel was critical to the campaign’s legitimacy, critical to their identity as a people, and critical to honoring God.
Sin affects us so much that it produces a craving in us that we must get whatever we desire, even to the point that we know it will destroy us.
The reason we are so discouraged and in such despair is that there is something in our lives that we want immoderately.
Common steps of sin (Achan’s example): 1. He saw, 2. He weighed, 3. He coveted, 4. He took them
To behold means to hold it, to put it at the center of attention.
Glory means weight; it is both heavy and important.
Glory comes from our imagination.
“Our imaginations are the tongues of the soul.” -Timothy Keller
Tongues have taste buds.
“Sin is an inflammation of imagination.” -Timothy Keller
Steps free: 1. Be aware of what we are gazing at, 2. Acknowledge our worship-sized craving, 3. Give weight to Jesus to give Him glory
Worship is weighing all that Jesus is and what He has done and will do.
Addictions are just ways in which we anesthetize ourselves, because we don’t think we matter.
