POINTS:
Water baptism started as a Jewish tradition following God’s commands of ritual cleanness to be able to approach Him and perform duties.
Repentance and baptism are intertwined.
The new importance of baptism: to be identified with Jesus in His death and resurrection.
Just as Jesus died and then was raised to newness of life, in water baptism we symbolically “die” under the water and are raised to “new life” in Christ.
Baptism is an outward expression of an inward faith and newness of life.
Water baptism is not a “get out of jail free” card.
Every new believer in the New Testament after Jesus’ death was baptized in water right away after conversion.
Why get baptized? Because Jesus did.
