WATER BAPTISM

Pastor Mitch Boese

August 23, 2026

Main Scriptures: Matthew 28:19-20

Additional Scriptures: Leviticus 16:4, 19:2, Matthew 3:11, 13-17 10:32, Romans 6:3-4, Galatians 2:20, Acts 2:28, 8:36b

POINTS:

  • Water baptism started as a Jewish tradition following God’s commands of ritual cleanness to be able to approach Him and perform duties.

  • Repentance and baptism are intertwined.

  • The new importance of baptism: to be identified with Jesus in His death and resurrection.

  • Just as Jesus died and then was raised to newness of life, in water baptism we symbolically “die” under the water and are raised to “new life” in Christ.

  • Baptism is an outward expression of an inward faith and newness of life.

  • Water baptism is not a “get out of jail free” card.

  • Every new believer in the New Testament after Jesus’ death was baptized in water right away after conversion.

  • Why get baptized? Because Jesus did.
