POINTS:

  • Joy is living in the confidence that comes from what you know is true about God, and is a direct result of a heart that has placed all its hope in Christ.

  • Hope is the confident expectation of what God has promised.

  • Joy is closely tied to hope.

  • Idols are the things or people we place our hope in. Idols will fail you.

  • Four root idols common to humanity:

  1. Comfort - We believe the lie that life should be easy.

  2. Approval - We think that we can live our lives in such a way that everybody will be happy with us.

  3. Control - We think if we can manage our world, everything will go the way we want, and we will be comfortable.

  4. Power - We are placing our hope in our performance.

  • Tribulation means severe trouble. It originates from the Latin noun tribulum, which was a heavy threshing board studded with sharp iron teeth. It was dragged over harvested grain to separate the seed from the husk. Tribulation is a separating force.

  • We can tell we have placed our hope in comfort by how we respond when we are uncomfortable.

  • We were not born in a world of comfort; we were born into a world at war.

  • You can live your life without being jerk for Jesus, yet also live it without being controlled by other people’s opinions.

  • With control, we prioritize our happiness over everyone.

  • We can control NOTHING, except our response to tribulation.

  • The lie we believe with power is that we will always win.

  • To make Jesus the root of your life:

  1. Go to Jesus in and with everything.

  2. Surrender everything to God.

  • You have not out-sinned the grace of God.

  • You are completely known by God and welcomed in His presence.

  • Real joy isn’t found in our victory, but in our surrender.
