POINTS:
Making Jesus our focal point when reading the Bible:
1. It makes us more teachable.
2. It takes the Bible from a moralistic exercise to God’s passionate pursuit of our hearts.
When we read the Bible on a purely moralistic level, we view the Bible as a list of dos and don’ts and think the Bible is about us.
David turned the water into an act of worship.
Moralistic lessons:
1. Everything you think you’ve earned is really a gift from God.
2. Christian leaders must direct people to God, helping Christians grow beyond a leader’s approval and example to focus on Jesus.
3. These mighty men are so devoted to their king that there is no difference between a command, a suggestion, or a sigh.
We can tell if we are really living this lesson out by looking at both our giving and our offenses.
Our offense reveals us.
Whoever we idolize, we demonize.
A Christian is someone who concentrates on God’s heart.
Religion asks God, “What do you want?” Whereas Christianity asks God, “What do you love?”
Jesus has overheard our sigh.
