Main Scriptures: 2 Samuel 12:13-25
Additional Scriptures: 2 Samuel 7:16, 12:5-9, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, Psalm 51:7-8, Romans 3:23-24
POINTS:
- “If I am forgiven, why is this terrible thing happening to me?”
- Grief must be dealt with, or it will deal with you.
- There is no time limit on grief, but some seem to be stuck in it.
- Contempt = to have an attitude of scorning, disrespect, and disdain for something or someone considered beneath consideration or worthless.
- At the root of David’s contempt is a deep neediness.
- God didn’t grow distant from David, but rather, over time, David gradually became distant from God (slow fade).
- It’s David’s neediness at the center of his heart that makes him a coward.
- We abandon integrity first when God isn’t at the center of our lives.
- “Why do people find themselves on the floor? Because the thing they were leaning on the most was a physical image of a spiritual reality.” -Timothy Keller
- The difference between terrible suffering and suffering that completely overthrows you is where you’ve placed your hope.
- When Jesus is our hope, suffering will hurt us, but it won’t destroy us.
- “We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us: we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.” -CS Lewis
- Religious yoke = when you hold on to God’s promises while you place your hope in yourself.
- Grace = God’s unmerited favor, love, and kindness.
- When God is our hope in grief, we will begin to see glimmers of God’s grace in the dark.
